Using ChatGPT to create classroom exercises based on a research article
I uploaded an old article of mine to ChatGPT and used a series of prompts to unpack the key findings, design quiz questions, and create class discussion questions. I then added comments throughout the output where ChatGPT got it wrong or a little off.
All in all, it did a really good job answering the prompts I submitted, and a warning is provided to remind the user that ChatGPT may be wrong and one should check for errors. When I consider the amount of time it would have taken me to develop strong quiz and discussion questions, this was a huge time-saving exercise. However, the output still requires that the input (the article) is well-understood by the prompter so that mistakes can be flagged and corrected.
One idea for a class assignment is to take several articles on a topic of the week and randomly assign them to students. The instructor generates the key findings using ChatGPT ahead of time and identifies flaws in the AI summary. The assignment is to have students identify flaws in the AI summary. This makes it harder to use ChatGPT for completing the assignment. You could couple this exercise with helping students learn how to digest and understand research articles.
